Happiness and Health in Yarraville

Breakfast Image by @emmalandolina

Nestled in Melbourne’s west is the charming suburb of Yarraville which could easily be mistaken as a hip, inner city cultural hub. Amongst the famous Sun Theatre and the couples and families enjoying a sunny Sunday morning in the courtyard is our new favourite breakfast café, Heal.Thy Self Co.

Stepping off the Yarraville footpath and into the café, you’d be forgiven for assuming you’d travelled to a sleepy beach town. The tables are a sandy pine, dressed in yellows, oranges, and Tiffany blues. Palm leaves and succulent pot plants scatter the room while 90s era hip-hop plays in the background. To top it all off, the warm sun beams onto the outside courtyard on a beautiful summer morning and you can practically feel the sand between your toes!

The philosophy at Heal.Thy Self Co. isn’t difficult to grasp – they’re all about health and happiness. Everything created here is done with the human body in mind. That means only nourishing, whole foods straight from the earth are served up to make us shine bright. The menu is mostly plant based, using organic and free-trade products where available so you know you’re eating ethically and sustainably as well.

As you’d expect in any tropical setting, the fruit at Heal.Thy Self Co. is abundant. You can’t go past the Acai Bowl – topped with granola, coconut shavings and seasonal fruit, it’s the ultimate, antioxidant-packed breakfast for these warm mornings. Fruit bats will also love the Grounded Granola Bowl or the Chia Parfait, but it’s the smoothies that are this café’s big ticket. Mixing plant protein, fresh fruit and superfoods galore, you’ll find it hard to choose from Heal.Thy Self Co.’s impressive list. Ask for the Breakfast Blend to beef up your smoothie with oats, chia and flax.

For those looking for something savoury, try a nourishing twist on the classic Avo on Toast or enjoy a Whole Bowl full of organic greens topped off with a couple of free range poached eggs. Our vegan and gluten-free pals will have no problems satiating their appetite either, with ample options and alterations happily on offer. You might even be able to sneak a peek at how the friendly staff make their almond milk from scratch first thing in the morning!
