Monk Bodhi Dharma in Balaclava

It’s easy to walk straight past this tiny Balaclava ex-bakehouse. Monk Bodhi Dharma might be hidden all on its own in a little alleyway, but once you’re inside, you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’ve stepped into a cabin deep in the middle of the woods somewhere. The space is tiny but that’s all part of the charm. So cosy in fact, that the only thing missing is a fire and some marshmallows for roasting.

Fortunately, the food is just as comforting. Monk Bodhi Dharma is also a micro-roastery, so you can be sure the coffee here is a hit. Choose from exotic blends from all over the world to get you started. Your server is a bean expert, so make sure you ask for his or her recommendation.

The all day breakfast/lunch menu here is entirely plant based and presents a healthy twist on some classic brunch favourites. It’s not a long one, but it is a soulful one. The Bodhi Bircher is no doubt a go-to choice for the breakfast enthusiast, as is the crunchy Dresden Granola, topped with sweet berries and just enough spice. The Avignon Apple Pancakes are some of the best pancakes in town, made with super healthy buckwheat and served with cinnamon ice-cream.

The Umami Mushrooms is something a little different that can be done for breakfast or lunch, combining four different types of mushrooms and placing them upon a delicious slice of pumpkin, spinach and sun-dried tomato polenta bread. Top that with some goats cheese and red chili oil and you can forget about food envy, from your side of the table anyway! Plus, they are now running an 11 course degustation full of vegan delights that are gluten-free, refined sugar-free and NGO (no garlic | no onion). Sign us up!

The run down, brick and timber interior of this tiny hidey hole is reminiscent of a treehouse in the woods, or the Costa Rican jungle if its coffee list is anything to go by. Don’t let size fool you, however, this place is big on soul. With perfect-plant based fare and friendly staff to match, make your way down the Balaclava alley soon for a feel-good meal and a little slice of inner and outer peace.
